UN Human Rights Envoy Visits MyanmarNewly-appointed United Nations Human Rights Envoy to Myanmar Paulo Sergio Pinheiro arrived Tuesday for the first visit to the nation to look into the human rights situation in the country.Pinheiro, a Brazilian appointed as the envoy in February to succeed Rajsoomer Lallah of Mauritius, is expected to meet leaders of both the Myanmar government and the opposition National League for Democracy including Aung San Suu Kyi (ASSK) during his three-day visit. The permission of Pinheiro's visit to Yangon by the Myanmar government suggests major changes have taken place since last October when it started a dialogue with the ASSK. The former U.N. human rights envoy Lallah, who resigned last November, was never allowed to visit Myanmar. However, the first of the three U.N. human rights envoys Yozo Yokota, who was in office from 1992 to 1996, was allowed to enter Myanmar. Both of the two former U.N. human rights envoys complained that their tasks were hampered due to the lack of logistical and administrative resources. |
