UNIKOM Brings Calmness to Iraq-Kuwait Border: AnnanUN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Monday evaluated the situation along the Iraq-Kuwait border as "calm" and recommended the U.N. Iraq-Kuwait Observer Mission (UNIKOM) be maintained.In his report to the Security Council, Annan said that UNIKOM has carried out its tasks smoothly, with the cooperation of the Iraqi and Kuwaiti authorities. He lauded the UN Mission for contributing to calmness along the border and hence recommended that the mission be maintained. According to the report, UNIKOM maintained close and regular liaison with the authorities of both Iraq and Kuwait at various levels. In addition, the UN Mission continued to facilitate the humanitarian activities of the International Committee of the Red Cross during the past six months. UNIKOM was established in April 1991 following the withdrawal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait. Its task is to monitor the demilitarized zone along the Iraq-Kuwait border, deter border violations and report on any hostile action. |
