DPRK Accuses US of Impeding Korean Reunification

The United Sates is throwing hurdles in the reunification of Korea, said an editorial published Monday by an official newspaper of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

The US was "escalating its campaign of confrontation" with the DPRK "to strain the situation on the Korean peninsula," said Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of the Central Committee of the DPRK's ruling Workers' Party.

The editorial called for joint efforts of "all the fellow countrymen in the North, South and overseas" to realize reunification despite differences in ideology, political system and religious belief.

The US administration is reviewing its policy toward the DPRK and thinking of adjustments and changes, US President George W. Bush said at his meeting with visiting South Korean President Kim Dae-jung early this month.

Bush also said that the U.S. government will not resume negotiations with the DPRK government in the near future.

In retaliation, the DPRK government has threatened not to observe a moratorium on long-range missile tests and nuclear power project.
