China Appoints Sponsor for Three Tenors Concert

China today appointed the Capital Tourism Group, a Chinese company, which provided services for the International Olympic Committee evaluation panel, as the sponsor for the Three Tenors concert.

The Three Tenors -- Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras -- are to perform a concert inside the walls of Beijing's Forbidden City this summer.

The event will be staged in the former imperial palace on June 23, the official Olympic Day, as part of the drive to ensure Beijing wins the right to stage the 2008 Olympics.

The Capital Tourism Group will provide luxury hotels, taxies, buses, tour guides and other services for the singers and viewers, according to the China National Culture and Arts Co. Ltd.

The tourism group will also manage ticket sales for the concert, sources said.

China will appoint more sponsors, some of them from abroad, for the concert, which is expected to draw an audience of 100,000.

Chinese media said that the concert would be "a historic event for all music lovers worldwide."

The Three Tenors first performed together in Rome in July 1990 to mark Carreras' return to the stage after he had battled leukemia.

They have since performed at other major venues throughout the world including in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower in Paris during the 1998 football World Cup. Enditem
