Chinese Navy Appoints First Doctorate Degree Holding Captain

The Chinese Navy has for the first time appointed a sailor, who holds the academic degree of doctorate in military science, to captain a ship, according to Navy sources.

Dr. Fan Jinfa is now the captain of "Yichang", a new type of missile frigate. His appointment shows that the Chinese Navy demands well educated captains, a local military analyst said.

Since 1997, when the Navy named Jia Xiaoguang, a master of commanding, as its first masters degree holding captain, dozens of masters and doctorate degree holders have become captains of destroyers and frigates in the Navy.

Currently, the captains of all the major warships in the Navy hold academic degrees at bachelor level or higher, while the number of masters and doctorate degree holders in the Navy is increasing at 10 percent annually.

The Navy is trying hard to accelerate the training of captains by opening special graduate courses for captains or sending them to study abroad.

In the next five years, the number of masters and doctorate degree holding captains is expected to rise by 30 percent, the sources said.
