Kenyan President Meets UN Secretary GeneralKenyan President Daniel arap Moi met with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and they discussed such African issues as conflicts and AIDS at State House Tuesday. At a press briefing after their talks, Moi said they discussed the conflicts in Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) , Somalia, the Sudan and elsewhere. He noted that their talks focused on what happened in southern Sudan and the Congolese problems, thus reducing the people's sufferings and the burden of global problems. Moi emphasized that his government and the Kenyan people supported Annan in his work. Annan said he and President Moi had a very good discussion focusing on African issues from the Sudan to the situation in Somalia, the DRC and Burundi, the U.N.-Kenya relationship and the U.N. activities in Kenya. On the issue of AIDS, Annan said "it needs of us to jointly fight against such epidemic from top to bottom, requiring social mobilization of all countries." However, the epidemic hits Africa hardest, the countries should mobile resources and do their best in education, prevention and awareness of the disease, he added. Annan arrived in Kenya's capital Nairobi on Sunday, and chaired the two-day meeting of the U.N. Administrative Committee on Coordination attended by more than 80 senior officials from various U.N. agencies at the headquarters of the U.N. Environment Program (UNEP) here.
