Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger to Attack in East

Sri Lanka's separatist Tamil Tiger rebels are in preparation of a massive attack against government forces in the east of the country, the state-run Daily News reported on Tuesday.

Leaders of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have planned to attack government forces in the east before their unilateral ceasefire is due to expire on April 24, the paper quoted intelligence sources as saying.

The LTTE rebels are to launch the attack as a reply to the government's lack of reciprocal truce they have demanded since they began their unilateral ceasefire on the Christmas eve last year, it said.

The paper said that LTTE area leaders have a meeting in Batticaloa in the east of the country to discuss and plan the operation with their field commanders.

The LTTE rebels have extended their unilateral ceasefire till April 24 for a third time and demanded positive response from the government. But the government has maintained that a ceasefire is possible only after talks between the two sides make substantive progress.

The rebels have been fighting against government forces since 1983 in the north and east of the country for an independent Tamil homeland. The bloody war has so far claimed more than 60,000 lives.
