Sri Lanka Plans Humanitarian Package to Commence Peace TalksSri Lanka is planning a package of humanitarian measures for the Wanni area in the north of the country to bring down prices of commercial goods and facilitate peace talks with separatist Tamil Tiger rebels, the state-run Daily News said Monday.Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar was quoted by the paper as saying in recent days that an agreement of understanding had been reached between the two parties and the measures will be taken at any moment. This was a condition of the understanding but not a precondition, he noted. He added that they would have to ensure the goods reach the shelves of shops and finally the people in Wanni where the Tiger rebel headquarters is located instead of falling into the hands of the rebels as has been the past experience. Measures will be adopted to ensure more entry points to the area so that more goods-loaded lorries could reach there, he said. He assured that there had never been an economic embargo as charged by the Tiger rebels and commercial goods had gone into those areas all the time. |
