Fidel Castro: US Despises the World

Cuban President Fidel Castro said Saturday the United States government showed its "absolute despisement" to the rest of the world by rejecting the Kyoto environmental agreement.

"This decision (by the US), preceded by other sinister consequences, starts a century which, without doubt, will be the most difficult and crucial one in the millennial history of mankind," said the Cuban leader.

Addressing a political rally of some 200,000 people in a crowded stadium of Havana, Castro condemned the US for its proclamation not to respect the Kyoto Protocol despite the fact that the US consumes 25 percent of the world's energy.

The Kyoto Protocol calls for the reduction of green-house gas emissions, to which scientists attribute the warming in the earth' s atmosphere and its side-effects.
