Denver Set up Trade Office in Shanghai

Approved by Shanghai Economic and Foreign Trade Commission, Denver municipal government of Colorado State, United States set up its trade branch office in Shanghai on March 30, hereby becoming the first city of the US to establish trade office in China.

Wellington E. Webb, mayor of Denver, and James F. Reis, president and CEO of the World Trade Center Denver, at the head of over 50 entrepreneurs, were reported on a two-week trade visit of Shanghai, Xi'an and Beijing after attending the opening ceremony of the Denver trade office in Shanghai.

As one of the most important cities of the United States, Denver has the headquarters of many world famous enterprises such as HP computer, Amkor Corp. and the United Airlines in the city. Last year Denver's exports to China exceeded US$595 million, up 14.9 percent over 1999. Its direct investment in China hit US$102 million.

Denver has over 15,000 Americans of Chinese descent and more than 12 Chinese cultural and commercial organizations. Zhonghua (Chinese) Adoption, which has its headquarters set up in Englewood, is the largest adoption organization for Chinese children.

Mayor Webb said, "thanks to the permanent normalization of US-China trade relationship, Denver's industrial and commercial circles cast their eye on China to seek new and broad market."

Joe Blake, chairman of Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, said at the opening ceremony, "as the largest commercial organization of Denver, we value the opportunities for Denver to be the first city of the US to set up trade office here. The trade office will help and guide those companies which wish to enter Chinese market and provide them with chances for a further development in the country."
