Greek Communist Party Calls for Milosevic's Release

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) on Sunday called for an immediate release of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, who was arrested by the Yugoslav authorities on Saturday.

Describing the arrest of Milosevic as a coordinated "terrorist act" of the imperialist NATO-US with the agreement of the European countries and with the collaboration of the Yugoslav government, the KKE said in a press release that the party denounces Milosevic's arrest.

The KKE also stressed that the struggle for the immediate release of the former Yugoslav president is imperative.

Commenting on the matter, Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis said that the Yugoslav government should be left to make its own decision, based on the Yugoslav laws.

However, European Commission President Romano Prodi, who is in Greece to attend an event concerning the 20th anniversary of Athens' entry into the European Union (EU), said that Europe wants Milosevic to be tried by the International Court of Justice at the Hague.
