Security Council Decides to Boost UN Force in Sierra LeoneThe UN Security Council Friday unanimously adopted a resolution to boost the UN peacekeeping force in Sierra Leone from 10,350 to 17,500 within six months, enabling the peacekeepers to push deeper into rebel- held areas.The 15-nation council adopted the resolution at the recommendation of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. The UN force, known as the UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL), includes 260 military observers already deployed, and its mandate was extended for six months, the resolution said. |
