Road Accident Kills 20, Injures 25 in BangladeshAt least 20 people were killed and 25 injured in a deadly accident on the Sherpur-Mymensingh highway on March 30 morning in Sherpur district, some 200 kilometers north to Dhaka, the United News of Bangladesh reported.Police and witnesses said the accident occurred as a Bakshiganj- bound cement-laden truck carrying 45 day-laborers from Dhaka overturned at 5:30 a.m. as left of its back wheels deflated. In the accident 14 people died instantly and 30 injured as the truck turned turtle on them. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital where two people succumbed to their injuries. As conditions of 15 people were deteriorating rapidly, they were shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where four others died. The villagers rescued the injured groaning under the truck and scattered cement bags and retrieved the bodies. Later firefighters also joined the rescue operation. Police said overloading was the main cause of the fatal accident, which became a "general phenomenon on this route as local commuters, coaches and trucks ply with heavy loads beyond their capacities." In last three years, sources said, around 50 people have been killed here in such accidents. |
