Prediction Studies OperationalChina has succeeded in putting studies on a series of short-term climate prediction systems, a key national research project listed in the government's Ninth Five-Year Plan£¨1996-2000£©, into professional operation, senior weather officials and meteorologists announced yesterday in Beijing, according to China Daily reports.While appraising the project yesterday, the meteorologists were confident that the systems will be capable of providing a synthetic, operational, short-term climate monitoring and prediction assessment model of the impact of climatic anomalies on the national economy, particularly in regard to agriculture, water resources, energy, transportation and the construction of key projects. Under the project, which was initiated in 1996, five sub-projects have been conducted, including: Studies on process and prediction signals for short-term climatic variations; The development of dynamic short-term climate prediction models; The impact assessment of climatic anomalies on the national economy; The development of research methods for the national integrated routine system of short-term climate monitoring, prediction and related services; The establishment of routine short-term climate prediction systems at regional centres and the studies on product application. The project is capable of correctly predicting the characteristics of ENSO, El Nino, an anomalous warming of ocean water off the west coast of South America, and La Nina, its opposite sister phenomenon. It will also reveal laws governing regional climatic changes in different parts of China, including summer cold injuries in Northeast China and severe droughts in North and Northwest China.
