Development of Chinese Science Calls for BrokersTurning scientific results into products is a complicated process. It involves not only technology, equipment and industrial arts, but also investment, management and marketing. At present, high-tech industry have become mainstays of the national economy in most countries of the world. Marketing and turning into products scientific results by researchers themselves or responsible administrative departments is no longer able to meet the requirements of the market. More effecient in turning scientific results into products, professional science brokers have become more and more important, according to the latest issue of Beijing Review.Science brokers act as the bridge between enterprises and scientists, facilitating the exchange of products and funds. The broker¡®s role is defined this way£º He or she is hired by the buyer¡ªa person or a company ¡ªto find technology the buyer needs £» the broker may also be hired by researchers or research institutions to promote their scientific results by explaining the features and functions of these discoveries. Brokers can propose practical ways to develop and purchase the technologies. Experts point out that brokers must be knowledgeable in the area of science and technology and able to analyze and evaluate new high-tech products. A capable broker should be familiar with the relevant policies and laws because the technical trade is closely supervised. Brokers also are requested to be familiar with the patent agency and negotiations. In addition, brokers are expected to narrow the gap between sellers and buyers and help them reach concensus. First-class brokers can turn scientific results into hot items for the market, avoid wasting government investment in scientific research, create benefits for enterprises, allow researchers to realize the economic value of their research and make research more market-sensitive. The Government has suggested drawing up regulations and operating methods to manage science brokers in order to enhance their bridging function and help them accelerate development of the knowledge economy. Currently, the Government is planning to readjust science broker companies and their branches to strengthen their role in turning scientific results into products. By strict training, exams and other initiatives, the Government hopes to make the brokers more professional. The relevant Government departments say they will improve the environment for brokers'activities so this industry will develop healthily and promote the development of Chinese science.
