Key Water Control Project Launched in Southwest China

Work on the construction of the Zipingpu Water Control Project, one of the top 10 projects outlined in China's west development strategy, was officially kicked off in the city of Dujiangyan, Sichuan Province in southwest China Thursday.

The project on the upper valley of the Minjiang River is of great value to agricultural irrigation, urban water supply, flood control, environmental protection and tourism, Sichuan Governor Zhang Zhongwei said.

Its four sets of generators will have a total installed capacity of 760,000 kilowatts.

The project is also expected to expand the lifespan of the Dujiangyan Dam, the world's oldest water conservation project, experts said.

The project is expected to cost 6.236 billion yuan, including a 32.2-billion-yen loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.

The whole construction work is scheduled for completion by the end of 2006.
