US Resolution Interferes in Olympic Affairs, Says Chinese Official

The resolution opposing Beijing's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, approved by the House International Relations Committee of the United States on Thursday, is a severe interference in the Olympic affairs, a top official of the China Olympic Committee said Friday.

The House International Relations Committee passed a nonbinding resolution, saying that the 2008 Olympic Games should not be held in Beijing unless China radically improves its human rights record.

"The primary objective of the Olympic Games is to enhance understanding and friendship among people and athletes of different colors, religions, races and political beliefs. The US resolution not only violates the Olympic spirits, but also betrays the principles of the Olympic movement." said the Chinese official.

"Every member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is entitled to bid for the Olympic Games, and it is the right and responsibility of IOC to choose the host city for the Games." he added.

Beijing, together with Paris, Toronto, Osaka and Istanbul, is bidding for the 2008 Olympic Games and the IOC will select the host city on July 13 in Moscow.
