Shenzhen Is Highest in China in Population Density

With fewer than five million residents, this young city, Southern China's Guangdong Province, is the highest in China in terms of the population density.

The population density in Shenzhen is 2,079 persons per sq. km, with 4,855 persons per sq. km in the Special Economic Zone. Numerous high-rises have sprung up in Futian District, with its population density topping 9,000 people per sq. km.

Among every 100,000 people, 10,397 have a college education or above. Of Shenzhen¡¯s workforce, those engaged in agriculture account for 1.4 percent, those in the industrial sector and construction sector, 58 percent and in the service sector, 40.5 percent.

The high population density has brought heavy pressure to the environment. Only 190 sq. km of land in Shenzhen can be developed.

Shenzen has a total of 1.93 billion cubic meters of water, averaging only 640 cubic meters per person, one quarter of the nation's average.
