Asian Countries in Consensus on Copyright Protection

Over 20 countries from the Asia and Pacific region have expressed their willingness to ratify the WIPO Copyright Treaty (WCT) and the WIPO Performances and Producers of Phonograms Treaty (WPPT), both key treaties in international copyright protection.

Representatives from China, India, Singapore, Thailand and other Asian countries also agreed to accelerate the revision of their own copyright protection laws in accordance with international treaties.

They made the commitment at a seminar organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which ended Thursday in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province in south China.

Representatives from the European Union and the United States also joined the discussion about copyright protection in a digital environment.

WIPO Deputy Secretary-General Roberto Castelo called for closer international co-operation in copyright protection while speaking at the closing ceremony.
