President Jiang Zemin Meets Viacom Chairman

President Jiang Zemin said Thursday that international media could play an active role in helping deepen understanding between China and the rest of the world.

At a meeting with Sumner Redstone, chairman and CEO of Viacom Inc., Jiang said China has made constant progress in improving its comprehensive national strength and the people's living standards since it began its reform and open-up drive in the later 1970s.

On this basis, major achievements have been attained in the development of the press, film and TV sector and other cultural undertakings, while international exchange and cooperation have been increasing, the president said.

China will firmly carry on its reform and open-up policy, continue to draw on the fine experiences of foreign countries, and increase contact and understanding with the people of other countries, Jiang said, adding that international media can play an active role in this regard.

Jiang said he highly appreciates Viacom's contribution to the promotion of understanding and cooperation between China and the United States.

Redstone voiced appreciation over China's achievements in economic development, saying that Viacom is willing to increase cooperation with China and work to let the rest of the world know more about China.

Viacom is one of the world's leading entertainment and media companies, whose business scope covers film, television, publishing and entertainment.

Redstone is visiting China at the invitation of the Information Office of the State Council.
