Tianjin Week, a large-scale promotion campaign to raise the profile of the north China port city of Tianjin, was opened Wednesday.

A big Tianjin delegation, headed by Mayor Li Shenglin and comprised of people from the business, culture, tourism, sports and media sectors, attended the event.

The highlight of Tianjin Week is business talks and projects promotion. The Tianjin municipal government is offering 230 projects for investment, and exhibiting commodities of 188 categories.

The 2,100-square-meter exhibition area at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center is divided into two zones, one for photo exhibition and one for commodity exhibition.

The photo exhibition is aimed at introducing Tianjin's developments in different phases. The commodity zone is used to showcase products under the categories such as new materials, new energy, textiles, chemicals and high technologies.

Other activities include a lecture on Chinese medicines, a Beijing Opera performance, a seminar on HK-Tianjin IT cooperation, a dragon boat race and a goodwill football match between Hong Kong and Tianjin players.

The 2001 Tianjin Week is opened following the successful launch of a nine-day Hong Kong Week in Tianjin last March.

Jiang Enzhu, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), officiated the opening ceremony of the Tianjin Week.

Hong Kong's Financial Secretary Donald Tsang, on behalf of HKSAR Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, made a speech to the opening ceremony.

Tsang said that Hong Kong and Tianjin are both important ports of China, and have lots of things in common. The two can complement each other in many fields and have great potential for future cooperation.

By the end of 2000, the number of ventures financed by Hong Kong business people in Tianjin had reached 4,930, with a total investment of US$14.36 billion.
