China Embarks on Massive Upgrading of Transportation

China is to carry out massive projects of upgrading its highways, ports and transport facilities and equipment in the next five years, Vice Minister of Communications Hu Xijie said Thursday.  

New Freight Train Scanner System in Service

Two staff members from the Customs of Manzhouli, a Chinese city on the Sino-Russian border, survey the cargo through the new scanner system March 27, 2001. The freight train scanner system, said to be one of the world's most advanced scanner systems, is jointly developed by the Nuclear Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University and Beijing Huali Technololgy Development Company. It is especially designed to combat smuggling activities on the railway line.

Beijing's 4th Ring under Construction

The 65.3-kilometer Fourth Ring, a key project of the State "Five-Year Plan", is under busy construction. A group of almost 400 Rhinopithecus roxellanaes and scores of families of Lisu Ethnics coexist in the area for a long time. Farmers of Lisu Ethnics live in the mountains without hunting and lumbering and the monkeys never destroy crops of farmers. A group of four farmers was set up a few years ago in order to protect the Rhinopithecus roxellanaes and their habitats in the forest.
