China to Investigate National Grain Stock

A nation-wide investigation into China's grain stock is scheduled to be initiated by the State Council on April 1, in an effort to find out China's actual grain reserve, according to a tele-conference held Thursday on this issue.

Chinese Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao made a speech at the conference, saying that the Chinese government at all levels as well as departments involved should cooperate in a practical and realistic manner to complete an investigation of all state-owned grain warehouses. Anyone who misleads the inspection or commits wrongdoings will be severely punished.

Wen also told the conference that uncovering the county's grain stock volume will assist the central government to work out precise grain policies, accelerate agricultural restructuring and further the reform on reserving grain, circulation and management.

He also required provincial governors to take charge of the investigation and do the job in a thorough and down-to-earth way.
