Oil Tanker Collides With Cargo Ship Off Danish Coast

An oil tanker rammed into a cargo ship off the southeastern coast of Denmark shortly after midnight Wednesday, causing thousands of liters of oil to spill, according to local press reports.

The Marshall Islands-registered oil tanker, carrying 30,000 tons of oil, sustained damage in the collision with the Cyprus-registered cargo ship near the Danish Falster Island.

Four Danish and one German rescue ships rushed to the scene, but rescue work was delayed until Thursday morning due to bad weather, said the reports.

No casualties were reported in the incident, said Danish sea rescue authorities. However, bad weather condition in the area hindered efforts to keep the oil from further spreading.

The cause of the incident is not immediately known. And meteorological reports put wind speed in the coastal area at 18 meters per second when the accident occurred.
