Tom.com Taps ISP Market

Tom.com rolled out an Internet accessing service program last week to add on its content business.

The new service allows its users to access Internet by dialing up 171 at two yuan (US$0.24) per hour. As a promotional measure, Tom.com offers five hours' free access to each who signs up on its website or its branch 163.net.

Tom.com was enabled to provide the service by an alignment with China Netcom, which has set up a cable network of fibre optics lining up 17 provinces and municipal cities in China.

Ke Xiaojun, marketing director of Tom.com, explained why Tom involved iteself in the ISP sector. "Profit-making is exigent for all dotcoms. Tom.com is trying to make it by diversifying our business models." Tom.com made a loss of US$5.598 million last year.
