Okinawa Police Arrest US Marine for Ramming Patrol Car

A 25-year-old US Marine was arrested Wednesday in Okinawa Prefecture for ramming a patrol car with a vehicle reported stolen, local police said.

John Positano, the US Marine, rammed the front of the patrol car after being told to pull over his car at about 5 a.m., according to police.

Positano then drove away, abandoned the car about a kilometer away and fled on foot before being caught by police officers, police said.

Positano initially refused to answer police questions but was identified by a US military official Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Police suspect Positano was involved in the theft of the car, which was reportedly stolen in Ginowan in the Okinawa prefecture Tuesday afternoon.

Okinawa is home to 25,000 US troops, about half of all US forces in Japan, and local residents have long called for a reduction of the heavy Marine presence in the prefecture in reaction to a spate of serious crimes committed by Marines, such as arson and rape.
