World's Leading PC Producer Operational in Shanghai

The world's largest portable computer manufacturer, the Taiwan-based Quanta Computer Corp., saw its first joint venture become operational recently in Shanghai.

So far, all five major PC producers in Taiwan have established production bases in China's mainland.

Costing a total of 200 million US dollars in the first phase investment, the solely-funded joint venture, Tech-front Computer Corp., is located in the state-level Songjiang Export Processing Zone.

A million computers are expected to be produced by the corporation by the end of this year, bringing foreign exchange revenue from exports 1 billion U.S. dollars.

With the second phase investment of 400 million US dollars coming up, the company will reach an annual capacity of five million computers with a total added-value of 10 billion US dollars by the year 2003.

Quanta has been providing processing business for well-known brands like Dell, Compaq and IBM.
