Russia Denies Report on Large-scale Rebel Attack in GroznyThe office of Russian Presidential Aide Sergei Yastrzhembsky on Tuesday denied reports that rebels had attempted to seize the railway station in Chechen capital of Grozny on Monday night."This information is absolutely untrue," the office said, " there was sporadic shooting in the vicinity of a checkpoint near this railway terminal on Monday evening. No one was killed or wounded." "Not a single shot has been fired in this area today," it added. Some media here reported earlier Tuesday that Russian troops on Monday night repelled a large-scale attack by Chechen rebels aimed at taking a railway station in Grozny. The military was quoted as saying the assault was the largest rebel action in Grozny since federal forces took the city in January 2000. Colonel Vladimir Filatov, Grozny's military commandant, on Tuesday also denied such reports. "Some alarmists, probably journalists themselves, invented this. Nothing of this kind has happened. It has been a routine day, routine events," he said. |
