Shenzhen Highlights High-Tech Development

Shenzhen, one of China's five special economic zones, has plans to construct 93 major projects this year, including 43 high-tech industrial projects.

The annual investment for the high-tech industrial projects is set at about 10.13 billion yuan (about US$1.22 billion), up 100 percent from that of last year, said Shen Shicheng, director of the Shenzhen City Development Planning Bureau.

According to the director, the high-tech industrial projects will involve the information industry, bio-engineering, new materials, an industrial park for integrated circuits, a Founder High-Tech industrial park by Beijing University, projects for producing high-definition digital television sets, routers and compound nanometer pottery.

Other major projects that will be launched this year include the second phase project of the container berth in Shekou Port, the first phase of the subway, Tonggu Marine Channel, a conference and exhibition center, bases of logistics, the neighborhood broad-band network, as well as a modern agriculture demonstration project.

Shen said that the city government would pay 5.736 billion yuan (about US$691 million) of the total investment of 18.69 billion yuan (about US$2.25 billion) needed for the construction of 93 major projects.

He added that the rest of the investment will be covered by funds raised by companies themselves, overseas investment and loans from financial organizations.
