Japan's Isuzu Motors Starts Bus Production in China

Japan's Isuzu Motors Ltd. has begun production of medium and large buses in China, the first Japanese firm to engage in such production in China, the company said in a news release Wednesday.

The Guangzhou Isuzu Bus Co., jointly established by Isuzu and Guangzhou Automobile Group in Guangzhou, southern China, has started to produce two kinds of sightseeing buses with 33 and 49 seats respectively, Isuzu said, adding that demand for sightseeing buses is to increase quickly in China with the construction of more highways.

The production of shuttle buses with 43 seats is also underway, it said.

The joint company will produce 100 buses in 2001 and aims to raise the figure to an annual 1,000 units by 2004, with the local content ratio to be raised to more than 40 percent by September this year and 50 percent by the end of 2002.

Guangzhou Isuzu Bus Co. was set up in February 2000, with Isuzu having a 49 percent share and Guangzhou Automobile Group 51 percent.
