New WAP Gateway Platform System Developed in South China

A commercial version of a Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) gateway platform system for mobile communication has been developed by an information technology company, Jinpeng Group, in south China's Guangdong Province, company officials said Tuesday.

The system, which will enter China's market in the first half of this year, is expected to play an important role in the transmission of information between the wireless network and the Internet, experts say.

Jinpeng Group has received several million yuan from the Ministry of Information Industry and 50 million yuan from the State Economic and Trade Commission and the State Development Planning Commission to develop the system.

The WAP technology was developed by leading mobile phone manufacturers, such as Ericsson, Nokia and Motorola. It provides a connection to the Internet. The number of WAP mobile phone subscribers has increased sharply in China.

In a related development Tuesday, Jinpeng Group signed a memorandum with China United Telecom and Motorola on long-term cooperation memorandum. The three company will jointly develop new information technology products and application software suitable to the Chinese market.
