Kuwaiti Air Force Launches "Blue Sky" Exercise

Kuwaiti Air Force on Tuesday launched a large-scale military training exercise named "Blue Sky 11", the official Kuwait News Agency reported.

All Air Force fighter squadrons, helicopters and air defense units are participating in the two-day exercise, which includes interception missions, air raids and support of land forces, the news agency said.

Air defense units will strike targets which intrude into the fields of operations to protect the operation theater.

Choppers will provide logistic support and be involved in search and rescue missions.

The Blue Sky exercise is one of the largest exercises conducted unilaterally by Kuwaiti Air Force on a periodical basis.

Kuwaiti armed forces usually hold joint war games with western troops based in Kuwait, under bilateral defense cooperation agreements signed after the 1991 Gulf War that liberated Kuwait from a seven-month Iraqi occupation.

Kuwaiti, U.S. and British warplanes held a joint training in northwest Kuwait earlier this month.

But the drill resulted in a tragedy after a U.S. F/A-18 jet fighter mistakenly dropped a 500-pound bomb on military observers on the ground, killing five U.S. soldiers and a New Zealander, and injured sever others.

The joint Kuwaiti-U.S. investigation committee is still trying to find out the cause of the incident.
