New Plan to Treat Saline Land in Yellow River Delta

A new technology has been developed to treat saline land in the Yellow River Delta, one of the largest deltas in China, sources said.

In a report by the Delta Protection and Development Center, the buried pipe alkali-drainage system was assessed as feasible for treating saline.

"The new technology overcame the shortcomings of old measures and gives a new way of improving saline land in the areas," said Jie Yishou, an expert with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.

The system will be used on 171,420 ha. of saline land and to turn 129,700 ha. low-yield land into high-yield land capable of sustainable development, sources said.

The Yellow River Delta, with a total area of 787,000 ha, has great potential to be developed into new farmlands. Saline has long been the key problem in the development of the land.
