Foreign Investors Interested in Yunnan's Mining Industry

To date, foreign investors have signed more than 50 agreements with southwest China's Yunnan Province to prospect local mineral resources, local sources said.

Coming from Canada, Japan, Australia, Britain, the United States and South Africa, these investors will explore mineral resources in an area of 4,000 square kilometers.

Among the projects, the Lanping Lead-zinc Mine, a 500-million US-dollar joint venture between the province and the British Billiton Corp. is the largest Sino-foreign mineral exploration project in China.

The Ministry of Land and Resources of China has granted Yunnan, the first and only one in the country, the right to approve foreign investors to develop local mineral resources.

In the meantime, Yunnan has made a point of exploring mineral resources that are in short supply in China.

The province has sent eight investigation teams to neighboring Laos to seek possible cooperation chances.
