Laos Reshuffles Cabinet

Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Boungnang Borachith was on Tuesday elected by the parliament as the country's new prime minister in a cabinet reshuffle, according to a press release of the parliament.

The 99-member National Assembly approved a cabinet reshuffle proposed by President Khamtay Siphandone, who was re-elected as the country's president and chief of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Choummali Sayasone was appointed as the country's vice president, replacing Oudom Khattigna, who died in December last year.

Two new faces were seen in the 21-member cabinet, whose terms expects to end in 2003.

The reshuffle was carried out during the seventh general meeting of the National Assembly, which was convened Monday and will conclude on April 7.
