A recent survey conducted by a Shanghai survey team showed that Shenzhen people's per capita annual disposable income has been up to 21,577 yuan as the highest among China's 35 large and medium-sized cities. What do the well-to-do Shenzhen people do with their money? Authoritative sources from the Social Investigation Center of Shenzhen tell us the way they spend their money.

Shenzhen, a city that grants residency to migrant jobbers, has attracted a multitude of high-level talented professionals. Citizens in the city spend a very large sum of money in education, at a per-capita average of 1,111 yuan last year, 1.3 times over 1995.

Urbanites spent an average of 1,315 yuan in communications, an increase of 4 times over 1995, by the end of last year, the city boasts 93 mobile phones and 54 PCs in every 100 families. Many residents have moved from smaller flats to bigger housing and some have even come to have extra residences of their own. The per capita living space rose to 17.5 square meters last year, 4.6 square meters more over 1995. Some 91.5 percent of Shenzhen families have private housing or flats.

More than a half of the city's average consumption growth was attributed to purchasing private cars, 7 out of 100 families in the city have cars, up 2 to 3 from previous two years. The figure will continue to rise. During the Spring Festival this year, more than 200,000 Shenzhen people went to travel abroad, from 1995 to 2000, the annual tourism consumption increased by 18 percent and a weighty amount of these was on travel abroad. In recent years, not cooking at home is becoming a trend featuring people's life in Shenzhen.
