Mushrooms Kill 8 in Vietnam

A woman and seven children died after eating poisonous mushrooms in northern Vietnam, police said.

Ly Thi Sy and her six children, aged 3 to 16, died last week after eating mushrooms that had been picked in the jungle of Cao Bang province, police said. A neighbor's 4-year-old son also died.

Police said all the victims had severe stomach pains and nausea. Eight other people from the two families also became ill.

Vietnam's Food Hygiene Control Department said Monday that 59 people died of food poisoning last year, but most of those cases were caused by contamination, spoiled food or poisonous fish. In 1999, 71 deaths were reported.
