Chinese Venture Through World Fourth Largest DesertTen Chinese recently successfully crossed the Badain Jaran Desert in northwest China, the country's second and world's fourth largest desert, from south to north by vehicles in nine days. This is human's first expedition to that desert, which is called "sea of death." The members of the expedition team came from Gansu Province and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. A vehicle was abandoned in the desert during the expedition because of malfunction. The expedition team took photos and videos, and collected precious data about the desert. The Badain Jaran Desert, with an area of 49,200 square kilometers, is situated in the center of the Alxa Desert in Gansu. Drifting sand dunes constitute 83 percent of its total area. The central part is dense, tall sand hills, most of which are 200-300 meters and some as high as 400 meters.
