Xinjiang Reports Higher Foreign Trade VolumeNorthwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region registered a foreign trade volume of US$2.26 billion for 2000, ranking first in the northwestern region of China, statistics show.According to Liu Yi, director of the region's Foreign Trade Bureau, the figure was 19th among all China's provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. Liu said the region reported a trade surplus of over US$100 million last year, with the exports standing at about 1.2 billion US dollars and imports more than 1 billion US dollars. Northwestern China consists of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Qinghai, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces. Liu said, Xinjiang has made marked progress in using foreign capital. Last year, the region approved 58 foreign-funded projects, 12 percent more than for the previous year. These projects used 20 million US dollars. Up to date, the region has established 60 enterprises in other countries and regions, involving a total investment of 17.6 million US dollars. Currently, Xinjiang has opened 27 highway, railway and air ports.
