Official Gets 11-year Jail Term for Stealing, Gambling

An official in Yunnan Province, southwest China, was recently sentenced to 11 years in jail for stealing a car and driving it all the way to Myanmar to gamble, local court officials said Monday.

Hu Honghui, former deputy head of the commodity prices bureau of Simao City, was found guilty by a local court for buying a fake car plate and a fake driver's license between July-October 2000, and on October 28, he stole a car and drove it to a gambling house in Myanmar.

After losing all the money he had, Hu asked the gambling house to take the car as mortgage but was refused.

He was arrested by the local police upon walking out of the gambling house and later transferred to the Chinese police.
