Western China Horsemanship Festival to Be Held

The first western China ethnic horsemanship festival will be held in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, from June 16-26, an official with the Sichuan Provincial Tourism Administration announced Monday.

Zhang Gu, deputy director of the provincial tourism bureau, said that riders of the Mongolian, Uygur, Kazakh, Tibetan, Hui and Yi ethnic groups will compete with each other at the 10-day event. These riders come from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Inner Mongolia, Gansu Province and other regions inhabited by ethnic groups in western China.

A series of activities which display the typical culture of the western region will be held during the horsemanship festival.

The festival is expected to show the special characteristics of the western region and help explore tourism resources and develop the tourism industry in the region, Zhang said.

He said the festival is a complementary event to the 2001 China Domestic Tourism Trade Fair, scheduled for June 21-24 in Chengdu, which will be co-sponsored by the National Tourism Administration and the Sichuan Provincial Government.
