Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Most Hail-Hit Area in China
The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in the Tibet Autonomous Region has more hailstorms than any other areas in China, according to the Tibetan Meteorological Bureau.
Naqu in northeastern Tibet has an average of 35.9 hail storm days per year with an all-time high of 53 days. Bange ranks second, with an annual average of 31.4 hailstorm days. The record there is 48 days. Shengzha, An'duo and Suoxian have an annual average of 28 hail storm days, 27.9 days and 27.6 days, respectively.
Tibet plans to introduce a complete weather control system in 15 years in a bid to cut to a minimum the losses caused by various types of meterogical disasters. By that time, Tibet will be able to reduce hail-caused losses by over 85 percent a year and realize a deduction of direct losses by 300 million to 500 million yuan (about US$36 million to US$60 million) annually.
