Chunghwa to Operate Cross-Strait Express

The Taipei-based Chunghwa Express Co. plans to begin operating a cross-strait express parcel service, reports reaching here from Taipei said Sunday.

The firm has signed a cooperation agreement with the mainland's China Express Co. In the initial stage, a select number of post offices will operate cross-strait express services, a Chunghwa official was cited as saying.

The current cross-strait express parcel service market is dominated by foreign companies. DHL enjoys a 33.4-percent market share of the cross-strait express parcel delivery service business, while UPS, Fedex, OCS and TNT take up 4.6 percent, 3.54 percent, 2.3 percent and 1.15 percent, respectively. The remaining 50 percent of the market is in the hands of local express companies.
