Sri Lanka's Senior Customs Officer Killed

A senior officer of Sri Lankan Customs who was investigating commercial fraud was shot dead at Wednamulla, Kelaniya, suburb of capital Colombo on Saturday, police said.

Sujith Prasanna Perera, an assistant Superintendent of Customs was killed when he was driving his car from his residence at about 9 a.m. when two men on a motorcycle who followed his vehicle blocked his path and fired at him, police said.

They said that Perera's brother-in-law who was accompanying him was seriously injured and was hospitalized. He was reportedly out of the danger.

Customs sources said that the 33-year-old officer had reportedly received threatening calls telling him to stay out of certain investigations.

A special police team has been appointed to probe the murder.
