ICRC Repatriates 814 Ethiopians From Eritrea

A total of 814 Ethiopians Friday left Eritrea for home under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), an ICRC press release available here said.

The operation took place between the Eritrean town of Adi Quala and the Ethiopian town of Rama via the Mereb river, according to the release.

Ahead of the repatriation, the ICRC delegates in Eritrea held private interviews with the Ethiopian nationals to check their wish to return to their motherland.

Since last December, the ICRC has repatriated more than 8,800 Ethiopians from Eritrea, and it will continue to assist future repatriations of all remaining prisoners of war as well as other persons affected by the war between the two countries.

Tens of thousands of soldiers from Ethiopia and Eritrea are believed to have been killed and many more displaced during a two- year border war which began in May 1998. The two sides signed a peace accord last December.
