Jobless in Taiwan Hit 3.71 Percent in February

Taiwan's jobless rate hit 3.71 percent in February, setting a record high for the month since 1978, according to reports reaching Hong Kong from Taipei Friday.

The number of jobless reached 364,000, also a record high, which local officials attributed to the world economic slowdown, local industrial transformation and the end of temporary jobs after the Chinese New Year.

People lost their jobs in February mainly because of the closure of plants or the scaling down of businesses, which accounted for 143,000 jobless, while 46,000 people lost their temporary Chinese New Year jobs.
