Beijing to Get More Milk From Neighboring ProvinceHebei Province, north China, plans to turn itself into the dairy production base for Beijing, the national capital, and Tianjin, one of the largest cities in the country.Hebei, which embraces the two cities geographically, plans to increase the number of cows in the province to 924,000 by 2005, to produce 1.37 million tons of milk annually. In the next five years, the province plans to set up 500 model dairy farming zones, involving 5,000 local families. According to local government officials, the province has introduced a number of species of cows and in the future, local farmers will improve the quality of their cows by using imported frozen sperm. Currently, China's per-capita milk consumption stands at 6.6 kg a year, much less than of the world's average. And in Beijing and Tianjin, the figure is 18 kg. |
