World Meteorology Day Observed in BangladeshWorld Meteorology Day was observed in the country Friday as elsewhere in the world with this year's theme "Volunteers for Weather Climate and Weather."Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) chalked out elaborate programs to observe the day in a befitting manner, which began through holding a rally from the Abhawa Bhaban at Agargaon, the head office of the BMD, to the parliament. Speaking on the inaugural function, Defense Secretary Idris Ali said that natural calamities could not be prevented, diverted or subdued. Timely forecast and warning could, however, minimize damages by them in terms of lives and properties, he said. Keeping this in view, the defense secretary said that the government undertook steps to provide the BMD with modern and sophisticated meteorological equipment, technology as well as trained officers and staff during recent years. He said the government took up a project for numerical weather prediction. Another project for modernizing the seismological observatories in Dhaka, Sylhet and Rangpur had also been taken up to enable the BMD to become self-sufficient in earth quake observation, he disclosed. The inaugural function was followed by a technical seminar and exhibition of meteorological equipment and charts. Meanwhile, special supplements were published in the leading dailies and special programs were telecast by the Bangladesh Television to mark the day.
