China Firmly Opposed to US Legislators' Attempt to Block Beijing's Olympics Bid: Spokesman

China is firmly opposed to the attempts by some US legislators to block Beijing's bid to host the 2008 Olympic Games, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Sun Yuxi said Friday.

Sun described the attempts by US Senator Jesse Helms and some others, who are overwhelmed by a cold-war mentality and have ulterior motives, on accusation of human rights as an "open defiance of and challenge to the principles of Olympics".

"Such a farce must meet with rejection from people from across the world and people of sports circles from all countries who uphold justice," he said.

The aim of Beijing's bid to host the 2008 Games is to develop Olympic activities and promote the Olympic spirit as well peace, friendship and progress of humankind, said the spokesman.

Sun stressed that any discrimination against a country or an individual with regard to race, religion, politics, gender or other reason runs against the spirit of Olympics.
