China Urges Enterprises to Engage in Environmental Protection

The second seminar on enterprises' engagement into environmental protection will be held in Shenzhen from May 31 to June 2, according to the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA).

The organization will try to give advice and information, from experts attending the seminar, about how to encourage enterprises to engage in environmental protection and expand the financing channel, said Yu Dehui, an official with SEPA.

The government has started to make environment-related businesses profitable and introduce enterprises into the field, but the market has not fully shaped yet, he added.

Experts here noted that about 100-billion-yuan investment from the government in building a mature market is likely to attract at least 700 billion yuan of funds from society and companies.

Yu said about 250 experts, officials and businessmen from the banking and financial industries are expected to attend the seminar.

The first seminar of this kind was held in Beijing in 1999 and attracted much attention, allowing companies to run the facilities for environmental protection.
